These nonverbal communication skills will help you to feel confident, connect with others, and build rapport. The next step is for you to recognize facial expressions so you’re able to respond to people with sensitivity and authenticity.

Dr. Paul Ekman discovered that there are seven universal micro expressions (facial expressions whose duration can be as little as 17/100 of a second). The seven universal micro expressions are:

Fear Micro Expression

When someone feels fear, it looks like this:

  • Their eyebrows are raised and flat.
  • The upper white of their eyes show.
  • And their mouth can be open, with the lips stretched or drawn back.

If you see this expression, you know that you’ve hit upon a topic that elicited fear in the person. You can reassure them and go into explanation to calm them down.
