Dr. Paul Ekman discovered that there are seven universal micro expressions (facial expressions whose duration can be as little as 17/100 of a second). The seven universal micro expressions are:

When someone feels fear, it looks like this:

  • Their eyebrows are raised and flat.
  • The upper white of their eyes show.
  • And their mouth can be open, with the lips stretched or drawn back.

If you see this expression, you know that you’ve hit upon a topic that elicited fear in the person. You can reassure them and go into explanation to calm them down.
